Reba McEntire Loses Quadruple Singer to John Legend’s Block

During John Legend’s reign on The Voice, the country queen resorts to some illegal measures.

Legend and coach Reba McEntire, along with fellow coaches Niall Horan and Gwen Stefani, competed for singer Lila Ford during the fifth round of blind auditions on Monday night. The Seattle-based vocalist nailed the four-chairs with her bluesy tone and piano-driven rendition of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.”

Stefani was so moved by the 24-year-old singer’s “beautiful” performance that she took off her shoes and walked down the stage to perform. “This is what the world needs. We want a singer-songwriter with a true point of view, original, unique (and) not trying to be like anyone else,” Stephanie Forde said. “You’re my dream girl from The Voice to work with.”

Meanwhile, Legend was impressed by Ford’s vocal maturity. “What I heard was wisdom. You understood everything you said,” he said. “But everything seemed completely under your control.”

Ford ultimately chose Legend as her coach. The victory prompted McIntyre to express regret that she did not use the block button on the self-proclaimed “king of the four chairs.”

“I was going to wait, but John is on a roll,” McIntyre said afterward. “We have to block John.”

Singer Jara Womack captivated the coaches with her captivating rendition of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black,” earning the Florida singer a seat on four chairs.

“With these big songs with these distinctive voices, people try to follow whoever that artist is,” Horan said. “You totally did this on your own.”

Determined to bring Womack on board, Horan knelt on stage to express his passion for coaching the 35-year-old singer, who is the granddaughter of R&B singer-songwriter Cecil Womack and niece of Grammy-nominated singer Bobby Womack.

In addition to her vocal prowess, Legend praised Womack for her genuine emotional delivery.

“There’s something genreless about soul. And I couldn’t really tell if you were necessarily a soul singer, but I could tell that you were a soulful singer, which means there’s something about it that’s authentic and truthful and passionate,” Legend said. “I just felt the drama and energy you were emitting from the stage.”

Legend clearly formed a soul connection with Womack when she decided to join Team Legend.

“She has such a powerful, unique voice,” Legend said of Womack. “You can tell she has a sense of purpose on stage and I want to help her achieve her goal.”

Reba McEntire’s Block on John Legend Backfires on Brandon Montel

Going against Team Legend comes with bad karma.

The coaches unanimously turned to singer Brandon Montel, who stunned with his emotional cover of HER’s “Hard Place” However, Legend found himself in a difficult position when McEntire hit the block button, preventing Legend from passing to the Tennessee singer.

“Most of the time she is a benevolent queen, but from time to time she does ruthless, cold-blooded (and) dirty things,” Legend said. “If Reba makes a mistake and there is an opportunity to steal, I will be first in line.”

McEntire didn’t regret going the extra mile for Montel, whose stage presence captivated the country icon.

“You’re so special. I don’t have a person like you,” McEntire told Montel. “I knew you were an artist, so when I turned around and saw you, I was like, ‘Oh, man. I’m so glad that blocked John.”

Ironically, Montel went with Gwen’s team. Stefani raved about the 29-year-old’s “great” and “original sounding” performance.

“Niall blocked me. He didn’t win the artist he blocked me for,” Legend reflected. “Reba didn’t win the artist she blocked me for. So, lesson: don’t block me. This will backfire.”

For Nini Iris, sometimes reality is better than (fan)fiction.

The New York-based singer, originally from the European country of Georgia, brought the house down and earned a four-chair turn with her powerful rendition of Everybody Loves an Outlaw’s “I See Red.”

“Without a shadow of a doubt, these were the best vocals of the day,” Horan said, calling Iris’s performance “commanding.” “I think we’re looking for a potential winner here.”

Legend echoed Horan’s praise for the 27-year-old singer. “It was fantastic to watch,” he told Iris. “You gave us a soulful rock performance.”

When Stephanie asked who her musical influences were, Iris revealed that she was a big One Direction fan in her younger years and even wrote fan fiction about the British boy band featuring Horan.

Iris lived out her director fantasy by winning The Voice. The singer decided to join Niall’s team.

“John Legend was turning into the king of four chairs,” Horan said. “But the prince with the four chairs is here now.”
