SAO PAULO – A team of researchers at Brazil’s Butantan Institute is developing an ointment capable of healing wounds and shrinking scars, the Sao Paulo-based scientific center reported Thursday.
The results of the study said the product was “safe” and “very effective” at regenerating damaged skin to prevent the formation of keloids, thick reddish scars.
The active ingredient of the cream is derived from molecules produced by fungi of the family Microspora, which is present in the Caatinga vegetation and is typical of the semi-arid regions of the North-Eastern part of the South American country.
“This ointment promotes smoother, more beautiful and higher quality skin formation.”
In addition to preventing the formation of keloids, the ointment also shortens the normal healing time of wounds from about two weeks to about 10 days, Souza noted.
So far, the team has studied the ointment’s effects on superficial wounds, but the scientists also want to study its usefulness in treating acne and burns.
Souza said that the product has completed the pharmacological research required by the Brazilian National Health Supervision Bureau, so it plans to submit a formal drug registration application by the end of next year.
If approved and the necessary investment is secured, the researchers hope to scale up production to industry and start selling the ointment in pharmacies, which she estimates could happen by 2025.
The scars that this product is trying to avoid are often formed by dysfunctional wound healing.
Although they are not harmful to health, these types of markings can cause emotional discomfort to the person who owns them due to their aesthetic effect.
