Rise of Nations is a historical real-time strategy game published by Microsoft. It was developed within Big Huge Games by Brian Reynolds, the designer of PC classics like Civilization 2 and Alpha Centauri. Rise of Nations was released in May 2003. The game follows a period in which many real-time strategy games were released and gained popularity, the most notable of which are Age of Empires II: The Conquerors and Empire Earth.
In single-player mode, players step into the shoes of the leaders of a nation/civilization. The player can choose from a selection of many nations, each with their unique powers and military units. Nations can be grouped into four categories: European nations, Asian nations, Islamic nations, and Native American nations. It is also possible to build wonders that, in the real world, have already been built by man. In standard mode, there are several ways to win: eliminate all enemies, conquer 70% of the map, or build enough world wonders. Although Rise of Nations is an innovative game, there are many similarities with the Age of Empires series.
