According to DiscussingFilm, the Star Wars series The Acolyte will begin filming in February 2022. The team will operate The Volume pavilion at London’s Pinewood Studios, which filmed both seasons of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. As a reminder, it uses large LED screens that display a background image in real time, which helps the actors get used to the role. Now the pavilion is occupied by director Peyton Reed, who is preparing the third part of Ant-Man and the Wasp there (the film is scheduled for February 2023).
So far, the creators of “Acolyte” have started looking for actors – they are looking for a leading role of non-European appearance. The series is described as an action thriller with elements of martial arts. Its action will unfold in the last days of the Rise of the Republic (for which comics and books are now being released), the show will show the nooks and crannies of the dark side of the Force and its influence on the galaxy. A total of eight episodes are planned.
The showrunner of the series is Leslie Hedland, creator of the Russian Doll series for Netflix. In a recent interview, she shared some of her Star Wars memories, such as watching the original trilogy on cassette tapes and reading Timothy Zahn’s novels in high school.
Most of the incarnations of Star Wars, Hadland likes role-playing games (apparently, we are not talking about computer games like Knights of the Old Republic, but about tabletop role-playing games).
This is my favorite version of Star Wars, the one in which you create your own Star Wars. And when people ask “what is your favorite movie” or “what is your favorite media”, then I answer “I really love RPGs.” For me, Star Wars is an opportunity to dive into the universe and start playing. If you can’t do something like that with a movie, TV series, comic or video game, then I’m not sure you’ve done enough as a Star Wars writer.
Hadland said she is trying to match Lucas, who brought a variety of genres to the original films, as well as reflections on politics.
We encountered feedback on social media, “Don’t add politics to Star Wars,” to which I replied, “George Lucas has already done this, these are political films.” War is by nature politics. That’s the problem.
So far, the series has no release date – they want to release it approximately in the spring of 2023. But the pandemic can still make its own adjustments.
