The Ministry of Health (Minsa) will implement comprehensive prevention, focusing on the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis, also known as PrEP, to reduce the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among high-risk groups.
According to Dr. Carlos Benites, Executive Director of HIV, STD and Hepatitis Prevention and Control in Minsa, Taking the drug can reduce the likelihood of acquiring HIV during sex by up to 92%.
This service will be provided at the Mexican Health Center located in the San Martin de Porez district and will provide people with a comprehensive prevention package (counseling, condoms, lubricants, HIV, syphilis and screening tests for hepatitis B and C) . Also includes pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a combination of two antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) in an oral tablet to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.
Beneficiaries who want to get PrEP must meet certain requirements: At least 18 years of age, HIV-free, not at risk of HIV exposure in the past 72 hours, no contraindications to PrEP medications, and voluntary decision.
HIV in Peru
The HIV/AIDS epidemic poses a threat to the public health of our country. In Peru, where an estimated 98,000 people live with the disease, there is also a population made up of men who have sex with men, transgender women and sex workers who are highly vulnerable and susceptible to infection.
Since the technical standard was approved, the Ministry of Agriculture has been working to speed up its implementation. During the first phase, health personnel were trained and the supply of antiretroviral drugs was ensured in different health institutions of the metropolitan Lima.
In the second phase, health service delivery will be extended to areas with the highest HIV prevalence (coast and jungle). Finally, in the third phase, the comprehensive prevention program will cover the whole country.
