SB19 vying for 2024 Grammy nomination with ‘Gento’

MANILA, Philippines — P-pop group SB19 will be vying for a nomination at the 2024 Grammy Awards after submitting their hit song “Gento” in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

SB19’s label Sony Music Philippines has confirmed that “Gento” has been approved as an entry. The label is pushing for its nomination in its “For Your Consideration (FYC)” posts on social media.

One report noted that SB19 was recognized by Forbes magazine as “the first Filipino group to reach the global digital song sales chart.”

Voting members of the Recording Academy will have until October 20 to make their choice. The official list of nominees will be announced on November 10 ahead of the 66th Grammy Awards, which will take place on February 4, 2024.

SB19 faces significant competition. Remix of “Karma” by Taylor Swift feat. Ice Spice, “Barbie Dreams” by FIFTY FITY feat. Kaliii, another FIFTY FIFTY song “Cupid”, “The Loneliest Time” by Carly Rae Jepsen feat. Rufus Rainwright and Sam Smith and Madonna’s “Vulgar” are also up for the award in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

If any of FIFTY FIFTY’s songs are nominated, they will be the first Korean girl group to be nominated for a Grammy; The only K-pop group nominated for a Grammy is BTS, who have been nominated three times in the same category.

Even though BTS went on hiatus, the group still managed to break through with “Take Two” and “The Planet,” while members Jungkook (“Seven” with Latto), J-Hope (“On The Street” with Jay Cole), RM (“Wild Flower” with Eugene) and Jimin (“Angel Part 1”) are up for solo roles.

In the first round of the 2024 Grammy Awards, 642 tracks are in contention for Song of the Year, 615 songs are in contention for Record of the Year, 592 songs are in contention for Best Music Video, 476 albums are in contention for Album of the Year and 405 artists are vying for the Best New Artist title.
