‘Serena could have had 30 Grand Slams’: March on Serena Williams’ storied career

Rick Macci recently commented on the career of her former protégé Serena Williams, arguing that she could have won 30 Grand Slams without certain limiting factors.

March, the seven-time USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) National Coach of the Year, was invited to be a guest on Canada’s Match Point Podcast and talked about many hot topics in the tennis world.

The 68-year-old famous American coach is a Master Professional with the USPTA, one of the largest organizations responsible for certifying aspiring tennis coaches. In this episode, Macci feels that many people underestimate Serena’s talent.

He coached Serena and Venus when they were still young in 1991 until they turned professional in 1995. March claims Serena Williams “checked all the conditions” as she took control of the court. If not for injuries and schedule restrictions, she would have won more.

“If Serena played all the tournaments, she didn’t rest, she didn’t get injured, she could have had 30 Grand Slams, but I don’t think it matters. People don’t realize how good Serena is. She checked out Every box, and then she added a few more.”

March then digs deeper into what makes Serena Williams an extraordinary athlete. In addition to his incredible serving ability on the tennis court, few players in the tennis world possess some of the physical attributes that the 23-time Grand Slam champion possesses, according to his former coach.

“She’s amazing, the best serve ever. People don’t understand, she hit 21 aces in one match, when was the last time you said that about a female tennis player? They don’t realize her What a great serve.”

“She’s the best ballhandler ever, maybe one of the best female athletes ever. Big, strong, fast, quick, nimble, she can do the splits. She also knows where you’re going to hit the ball before you do it. Arrived. She had so much anger inside her, and she looked at me with that look even when I was 10 years old. She had all the time in the world.”

Serena retired from professional tennis in 2022, bidding a fond farewell after losing to Ajla Tomjanovic in the third round of the US Open. Thereafter, after the birth of her second child, Adira River Ohanian, in August 2023, she began to venture into multiple business ventures while balancing time with her family.
