Serena Williams makes history with Fashion Icon Award

Serena Williams will become the first athlete to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Icon Award.

On Wednesday, Williams learned that the CFDA announced her as the winner of the 2023 Fashion Icon Award.

A dinner and awards ceremony will be held on November 6, 2023, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with Williams in attendance.

Past winners of the award include Lenny Kravitz, Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell, Franka Sozzani, Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams and Rihanna.

“Serena is one of the most inspiring people in the world…a true individual…she is an icon in sports…representing greatness at the highest level…bringing fashion into another world…for another The audience…Always true to herself, on and off the court…The perfect marriage of our worlds…The ultimate example of individuality in everything she does…Serena is a true style icon,” said CFDA President Thom Browne .

Williams is honored and excited to be recognized for his work in the fashion industry.

She said her fashion choices on the court are an important part of expressing who she is.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve used fashion as an outlet to express myself — fashion gave me the confidence to go out on the court, acknowledge who I am and know where I’m going,” Williams told Women’s Wear Magazine daily.

“My dream of owning my own brand S by Serena has become a reality and throughout my career I have been lucky enough to work with the most established designers and the most exciting emerging creatives. I have enjoyed learning my own style , and let it change as my life has evolved, but I have always maintained one thing: fashion is for everyone, no matter your body type, race, or income. “I am extremely honored to receive the prestigious Fashion Icon Award from the CFDA , an organization whose work I have long admired and ranks among the fashion icons I have always respected. “

The 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards will be hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker and will honor the best designers in womenswear, menswear and accessories, as well as winners in the Shop With Google Emerging Designer category.

Vera Wang will receive the Board of Directors Salute Award in recognition of her contributions to the bridal industry; Domenico De Sole will receive the Founders Award in memory of Eleanor Lambert ; Maria Cornejo will receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award; Alina Cho will receive the Eugenia Sheppard Media Award; Marla Hoffman will receive the Environmental Sustainability Award; Jonathan ·Jonathan Anderson will receive the International Designer of the Year award for his work.
