January 1998– Playing in the Australian Open, her first Grand Slam. She lost to her sister Venus 6-7, 1-6 in the second round.

September 12, 1999 – Win the U.S. Open and become the first Williams sisters to win a Grand Slam.

July 8, 2002 – At the age of 20, she was ranked No. 1 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world for the first time in her career.

2002-2003 – Completed her first “Serena Slam” by winning all four Grand Slam titles – Roland Garros, Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Australian Open – but Not in the same calendar year.

August 1, 2003 – You undergo surgery to repair a partially torn tendon in her left knee.

September 14, 2003 – Williams’ half-sister, Yetunde Price, was murdered in Compton, California. Both trials ended in hung juries, with Robert Edward Maxfield pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter and being sentenced to 15 years in prison. Maxfield was released in 2018 after serving 12 years in prison.

2004 – Launch of “Aneres” clothing line (Serena spelled backwards).

2008 – Establishes the Serena Williams Foundation to help American youth victims of violent crime and underprivileged children around the world.

September 12, 2009 – During her U.S. Open semifinal match against Kim Clijsters, Williams swore at a line judge who called her a foot mistake. Clijsters was awarded a penalty to win the game. The Grand Slam Board subsequently fined Williams a record $82,500 and placed her on probation for two years.

July 7, 2010 – While leaving a Munich restaurant, she stepped on broken glass and received stitches in both feet. She then underwent surgeries in July and October to repair torn tendons in her right foot.

February 2011– Received emergency treatment for a hematoma related to a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs).

July 9, 2016 – Won the Wimbledon title for the seventh time. Williams’ 22nd Grand Slam victory tied Steffi Graf for the most singles titles in the Open era.

September 12, 2016 – After spending 186 consecutive weeks as the WTA’s No. 1 player, she dropped to No. 2 behind Angelique Kerber. Williams tied Graf’s record for the longest consecutive week at No. 1.

December 29, 2016 – announced her commitment to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

January 28, 2017 – Defeated sister Venus in the Australian Open final and won the 23rd Grand Slam championship, surpassing Graf and becoming the leader of the Open era.

April 19, 2017 – Williams posted a profile photo of herself in a yellow swimsuit on Snapchat with the caption “20 weeks,” but the photo was quickly deleted. Williams and fiancé Ohanian are expecting their first child this fall, her spokesperson later confirmed to CNN.
