Pop icon Shakira has become Colombia’s global ambassador. The Hips Don’t Lie singer said she is proud to be from a Latin American country. On September 29, Spotify honored Shakira as the platform declared this Friday as “Shakira Day” and she was even announced as September’s “Equal Global Ambassador.”
“The role my fans have played in my career cannot be quantified. They knew how to understand me better than anyone else, and they brought me to where I am today with their unwavering support,” Shakira, 46, said.
The singer added: “The inspiration Colombia has had in my career as an artist is immeasurable. Colombia is an endless source of inspiration: colors, culture, sounds, stories, folklore and food. It’s such a rich culture and I’m so grateful to grow up where I did.” Looking back on her very long career, Shakira has managed to stand the test of time and, unlike many pop artists who have been around her, she has not faded into obscurity, but rather is still as popular as she was in the 2000s years.
Recalling her heritage, as well as the predominantly patriarchal system of the Colombian music industry, the She Wolf singer said: “I am proud to represent women from my country in a male-dominated industry. I am a proud Colombian and will remain one.”
