Shakira received the prestigious Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards held on Tuesday night (09/12/23) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The singer took the opportunity to express her gratitude to her children Milan and Sasha, who accompanied her at the ceremony and were her support after the breakup with Gerard Pique.

In her moving speech, Shakira said: “Tonight I want to thank the people who have contributed to my visual history. I want to thank my parents. I want to thank my children Milan and Sasha, who are here with me. Thank you so much for supporting me and making me believe that mom can do anything.”
The star also shared the award with her fans, who have always followed her faithfully, even in difficult times. He continued, “First of all, I want to dedicate this award to my fans who always, always, always support me, for better or for worse. Thank you so much for being my army and helping me win all my battles.”
Shakira split from her soccer partner in June 2022 after 11 years together, and they later reached a custody agreement that allowed her to leave her adopted home in Barcelona, Spain, and move to the United States with her children. In an interview with Elle magazine last year, Shakira admitted that she was going through an incredibly “difficult” time.
She said: “It’s hard to talk about, especially because I’m still going through it because I’m in the spotlight and because our breakup wasn’t like a normal breakup. It was hard not only for me, but also for my children. Incredibly hard.”
Shakira also said that she tried to protect her children by hiding the consequences of the couple’s separation from them, but it was not an easy task. He added: “I try to do that and protect them because that’s my main mission in life. But then they hear something at school from their friends or they come across some bad, bad news online and it affects them, you know?”
