In an interview with the New York Daily News (via Contact Music), Verhoeven talked about how he rejected Atomic blonde star will play Elizabeth Berkley in the title role in her film. He also touched on the fact that critics panned the film for being a complete mess, which also impacted Berkeley’s career so much that it hasn’t been the same since. So he feels Theron dodged a bullet that could have been fatal to her career. He said:
“Charlize auditioned too, and I don’t remember her having any problems with nudity at all. She was good and wanted the role, but basically she wasn’t famous enough at the time and just wasn’t right for the role. so we said no. I have complete respect for Charlize, but if she had been offered this role, she would probably have been chewed out just like Elizabeth. She was very lucky that she didn’t get the role. I congratulate Charlize on this because it would have been a miserable 20 years for her!”
Thus, the rejection is what turned the actress’s career in a different direction and now she is at the top of the entertainment industry.
