As the end of the year quickly approaches, moviegoers are looking forward to 2024 to see what big films will make a splash in theaters.
Next year will already see the release of many highly anticipated films starring many celebrities, including Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Lady Gaga and Tom Cruise, among many others.
From action films, animations and rom-coms to live-action reimaginings and thrillers, 2024 has a movie for everyone.
While some of these are months away, some can’t-miss films were revealed, including Evil Part 1, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Dune: Part Two. Then there are films like Beetlejuice 2 and Deadpool 3 that have fans of the franchises eagerly waiting to see their favorite character reprise their iconic roles.
Below, we’ve rounded up a selection of films that are expected to make waves in 2024.
Kingsley Ben-Adir plays reggae legend Bob Marley in the biopic opening on Valentine’s Day. The film chronicles the life and legacy of the late musical icon, his worldwide rise to fame and struggles.
Lashana Lynch plays his wife Rita Marley, and King Richard director Reynaldo Marcus Green helms the drama.
The first trailer was released in July and showed how Marley was loved by many, but also survived murder while singing for peace.
Jack Black returns as Po, the delicious kung fu-loving panda for another adventure in ancient China. Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu and Seth Rogen will join in the fun in the fourth installment of the animated franchise.
Rachel Zegler will star in the live-action version of the Disney classic Snow White.
Despite some online backlash over a Latino actor taking on the role, the film aims to add a “modern feel” to the story. Not much is known about the remake, but it will be a sequel to the original 1937 musical Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In it, a jealous evil queen orders the death of her stepdaughter Snow White, who is later rescued by seven dwarves living in the forest.
Gal Gadot will play the Evil Queen, and Andrew Burnap will play the role of Jonathan.
The plot of the film is being kept under wraps for now, but the storyline is said to not be a sequel to A Quiet Place Part II, but rather a spin-off. Day One stars Alex Wolff, Denis O’Hare, Lupita Nyong’o, Djimon Hounsou and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn.
The film is directed by Michael Sarnoski and written by John Krasinski, Scott Beck and Jeff Nichols.
Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem return in the highly anticipated sequel to the sci-fi hit. After his family is attacked, Paul Atreides (Chalamet) teams up with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen, native to Arrakis, in search of revenge. As he battles the conspirators, he must decide whether to follow his heart or save the universe.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler also star.
Zendaya is caught up in a love triangle in this powerful sports drama.
Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) directs Zendaya as Tasha, a former tennis prodigy turned coach who helps her husband Art (Mike Feist) prepare for an upcoming tournament against her ex-boyfriend and his former best friend Patrick. (Josh O’Conner). Tensions rise as their previous personal history begins to complicate their relationship.
After announcing the third film in the franchise, Ryan Reynolds hinted at the return of Hy Jackman as Wolverine. Jackman stepped down from playing the X-Men character in 2017’s Logan, but couldn’t resist inviting his pal.
In Deadpool 3, directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool crosses paths with a recovering Wolverine before they team up to fight evil together.
Nine years after Inside Out made people feel all those feelings, the sequel will hit the big screen in 2024. The Pixar film follows Riley, now in her teens, as she faces new emotions.
Amy Poehler returns to voice Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger. Diane Lane also returns as Riley’s mom.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as Mike and Marcus, taking on a new group of bad guys. Plot details are unknown at this time, but you can expect a lot of action and laughter.
Joining them in the fourth film in the franchise are Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Rhea Seehorn and Eric Dane.
It was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and written by Chris Bremner and George Gallo.
Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, continues his seemingly impossible mission in the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
The sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, there are currently no details on what is expected to be an action-packed film. However, expect to see Rebecca Ferguson, Hannah Waddingham, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg and Nick Offerman alongside Cruise.
Christopher McQuarrie will take the lead as director, with Bruce Geller, Erik Jendresen and Christopher McQuarrie co-writing the script.
Twenty-eight years after Twister caused havoc in movie theaters, its sequel is coming to the big screen.
According to Variety, plot details are scarce and it is unknown how the first and second films will be connected. However, Universal called the sequel “a new chapter for the 1996 film.”
IMDB also describes it as “a pair of storm chasers who risk their lives trying to test an experimental weather warning system.”
Kiernan Shipka, Glen Powell, and Daisy Edgar-Jones star alongside Maura Tierney, Anthony Ramos, and Sasha Lane. It’s unclear whether Twister star Helen Hunt will appear. Bill Paxton, who played former storm chaser turned television meteorologist Bill Harding in the film, died in February 2017 after complications from heart surgery.
Lee Isaac Chung directs from a script by Michael Crichton and Mark L. Smith.
Plot details are unknown, but Gru and his minions will undoubtedly have a new villain in the fourth installment of the family franchise. Steve Carell returns as the supervillain with a heart, as does Kristen Wiig as Gru’s wife Lucy.
Gru’s adopted daughters, Margot, Edith and Agnes, will also likely win the hearts of viewers with their cute antics.
Barry Jenkins is directing a live-action prequel to The Lion King. According to IMDB, after Simba becomes king of the Pride Lands, “he is determined to have his cub follow his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.”
Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa, with Seth Rogen reprising his role as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and John Kani as Rafiki.
The fourth film in the Captain America franchise stars Anthony Mackie, also known as Sam Wilson. Taking over after Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers retired, the new Captain America will embark on his heroic world-saving adventure.
Julius She directs from a script by Dalan Masson and Malcolm Spellman. Harrison Ford, Liv Tyler, co-star Danny Ramirez, and Sebastian Stan are rumored to reprise his role as Bucky Barnes.
Michael Keaton reprises his role as Beetlejuice in Tim Burton’s sequel. Not much is known about the sequel to the 1998 film, but cast members returning to the world of Beetlejuice include Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.
Newcomers include Jenna Ortega as Ryder’s on-screen daughter and Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife, as well as Justin Theroux and Willem Dafoe.
After winning the Oscar for Best Actor, Joaquin Phoenix is back in his clown makeup for the sequel. This time, Lady Gaga joins him as Harley Quinn in a role that many are eagerly awaiting her performance.
Director Todd Phillips shared the first photo from the Joker sequel on Valentine’s Day, showing the two stars interacting as their psychotic characters. The thriller also stars Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo make their Emerald City debuts as Glinda and Elphaba in the two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked.”
Directed by Jon Chu, the story shows how the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch were best friends before they became enemies. The lead actresses and Chu first shared their views on the witches in April this year.
Ridley Scott returns to the Roman Empire with the sequel to his 2000 film starring Russell Crowe. According to IMDB, Gladiator 2 will follow Lucius, the son of Maximus’ love Lucilla, after Maximus’ death.
Paul Mescal will play Lucious, along with Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. Other actors in the film include Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Djimon Hounsou as Juba and Joseph Quinn. It is speculated that Crowe will not be involved in the sequel.
