From Dan Woike: The last photo of LeBron James on the Lakers court for public viewing was of him screaming through a foot injury in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, despite his The injury was obviously limiting, but he played almost the full 48 minutes.
Of course, he can still bully his way into his position – his quality is almost unrivaled among players in his position. But when he pressed the accelerator to the floor, the acceleration feeling of the sports car disappeared. Electric athleticism dimmed. Along with that, some of his “wow” factor disappeared.
But for those in the Lakers’ first two days of training camp, that version of James has become just a memory. They now face the reality that, at 38, James is defying time again with his speed and explosiveness.

From Jeff Miller: After struggling to find his way with the Chargers, J.C. Jackson will be starting over in a familiar place.
The veteran cornerback will return to New England after the Chargers and Patriots agreed to a trade Wednesday morning.
The Chargers traded Jackson and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Patriots for a 2025 sixth-round pick, according to a person familiar with the deal.
Jackson’s time with the Chargers was filled with injuries, inconsistent play and off-the-field legal issues.
He joined the Chargers as a free agent in March 2022 and signed a five-year contract that guaranteed him $40 million and was worth as much as $82.5 million. At the time, the increase was considered significant.

From Gary Klein: Cooper Kupp was scheduled to be listed as limited on the Rams’ injury report Wednesday, but coach Sean McVay was discussing the star receiver’s release from injured reserve The team returned with a reference to “The Host.”
“What it says is limited: He’s not going to be limited,” McVay said at a news conference before practice. “I mean, it reads like Ron Burgundy just read that damn injury report.”
Kupp has missed four games due to a hamstring injury sustained during training camp. By returning to practice, the Rams have a 21-day window to activate him to the roster.

Denis Bouanga scored three times in the first half to take the Major League Soccer lead in goals and LAFC beat Minnesota 5-1 on Wednesday night United), locking in a playoff spot.
Buanga ended LAFC’s four-game, 372-minute scoreless streak in the fourth minute of the regular season home finale. He added two more goals before halftime as the defending MLS Cup champions eased into third place in the Western Conference in the second half.
Filip Krastev scored his first MLS goal for LAFC in the second half. LAFC is undefeated in its last seven games against Minnesota.

Christian Roldan scored in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time and the Seattle Sounders ended a four-game losing streak at home with a 2-1 victory over the Galaxy on Wednesday night to seal their playoff spot.
Seattle (13-9-10) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games against Los Angeles (8-12-11) with a 7-0-4 record. This is the longest undefeated streak in Galaxy history. Los Angeles’ only win in its past 17 games came at home in 2018. The club’s last win in Seattle was 1-0 in 2016.

Simone Biles and her teammates were far from perfect, but nothing could stop a victory that set a record for the U.S. women’s team and the greatest gymnasts in history.
The U.S. women’s team won a record seventh consecutive team title Wednesday night at the world gymnastics championships. For Biles, it was also her 33rd Grand Slam championship medal at worlds and Olympics, making her the most decorated female gymnast of all time.
Biles rose to international prominence in 2013 when she won her first world title 10 years ago in the Belgian port city of Antwerp.

1900 – British player Harry Vardon wins the U.S. Open golf championship at Chicago Golf Club, defeating JH Taylor with a total score of 313.
1985 — Eddie Robinson becomes college football’s winningest coach as Grambling defeats Prairie View A&M 27-7. It was Robinson’s 324th win, one more than Paul “Bear” Bryant had before retiring from Alabama after the 1982 season.
1991 – Fresno State beat the University of New Mexico 94-17, scoring 49 points in the second quarter, tying the NCAA single-quarter scoring record. Fresno State’s Derek Mahoney tied an NCAA record with 13 points.
1994—The NBA shortens the three-point distance to 22 feet.
2001 — Barry Bonds sets a new single-season home run record with his 71st and 72nd homers, but San Francisco loses to the Dodgers 11-10 and is eliminated from the playoffs .
2001 – The Mariners win their 115th game of the year to become the winningest team in American League history, surpassing the record set by the Yankees three years earlier.
2004 – Seven-time All-Star and six-time NBA championship forward Scottie Pippen announces his retirement from the NBA and Chicago Bulls.
2014 — Brian Hoyer’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin with 1:09 left in the game puts the Cleveland Browns within 25 Defeated the Tennessee Titans 29-28 with 2 points. It was the biggest comeback by an away team in league history.
