1920 — Toronto’s Mickey Roach scores five goals to lead St. Patrick’s to an 11-2 victory over the Quebec Bulldogs.
1964 – Boxing legend Cassius Clay joins the Nation of Islam and changes his name to “Muhammad Ali”, calling his previous title “the name of a slave.”
1976 — Dorothy Hamill wins the World Figure Skating Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.
1977 — Montclair State’s Carol Blazejowski sets a new college scoring record with 52 points against Queens College at Madison Square Garden in New York City (men and women).
1982 – The San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks combine for 337 points in the highest-scoring game in NBA history. After three overtimes, the Spurs won 171-166.
1983 – The 12-team United States Football League begins its first season with five games.
1984 – Winnipeg Jets’ Dale Hawerchuck sets NHL record for most assists in a quarter, including five in the second period of a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings .
1988 – Julie Krone becomes the winningest female jockey in history with her 1,205th career victory. Crown rode a mare named Squawter to victory in the ninth race at Aqueduct Racecourse.
1996 – Detroit’s Chris Osgood hits the target with 11 seconds left in the Red Wings’ 4-2 win over Hartford The puck went into an empty net, becoming the third goaltender in NHL history to score.
2000 – Shaquille O’Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers scores an NBA season-high 61 points and 23 rebounds in the Lakers’ 123-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
2001 — George Mason University defeats the University of North Carolina at Wilmington 35-33 in the second-lowest scoring game in the NCAA basketball game clock era.
2010 — Devin Harris scores 31 points and the New Jersey Nets beat New York 113-93, erasing an early 16-point deficit. The Knicks missed all 18 of their attempts in one of the most futile three-point shooting nights in league history.
2011 — Lindsey Vonn caps off an unforgettable weekend of ski racing in Tarvisio, Italy with a super-G victory for her third individual title in three days period. Vonn won the super mixed and downhill races on the first two days.
2014 – The Los Angeles Clippers defeated their rival Los Angeles Lakers 142-94. This was the most one-sided victory in the history of the Clippers and the most one-sided loss in the history of the Lakers.
2015 – Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim is suspended nine games as the school is punished for ignoring “the NCAA’s most fundamental core values” for academic, drug and other violations committed primarily by the men’s basketball program Behavior. The school was placed on five years’ probation and the basketball team was forced to forgo 108 wins with ineligible players.
2015 — Shane Walsh scores the winning goal in the fifth overtime to lead UMass to a 4-3 victory over Notre Dame, the longest in NCAA Division I hockey history of a game.
2019 – LeBron James scores his 32,293rd point in the second quarter of the Lakers’ 115-99 loss to the Denver Nuggets in Los Angeles, passing Michael Jordan for fourth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list Bit.
