SSO calls for vaccination to avoid cases of pneumonia, mainly among children – Oaxaca, Mexico

November 12, 2023. – In the framework of this year’s commemoration of World Pneumonia Day on November 12, the Oaxaca State Health Service (SSO) advises the population to get vaccinated and to seek medical advice from the health department if they experience symptoms of cough, sputum, fever and chest pain.

The agency has recorded 809 cases and 391 tragic deaths so far this year, with the most vulnerable being the elderly and children under five, as well as people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and diabetes. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or diseases that affect the immune system, such as cancer.
In an interview, Filiberto Cruz Vicente, a pulmonologist assigned to the department’s doctors at the Aurelio Valdivieso Hospital, explained that this pathology is caused by the lower respiratory tract, such as the lungs Infections caused by microorganisms, bacteria, viruses and fungi.
The expert noted that long-term exposure to tobacco smoke also affects the incidence, severity and evolution of a variety of other respiratory diseases, such as the common cold, influenza, tuberculosis, pneumothorax, pulmonary hemorrhage, some interstitial diseases and Covid-19.
He mentioned that pneumonia occurs more frequently in winter and is spread through direct contact with infected people. Small droplets expelled when the patient sneezes or coughs naturally enter the respiratory tract, nose and throat, and then reach the lungs after inhalation and cause infection.
He said getting vaccinated against influenza, pneumococcal and whooping cough, washing hands with soap and water after contact with sick people, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, eating healthily and drinking plenty of fluids can all prevent the disease.
Therefore, he called on the public to seek medical treatment promptly if they develop symptoms such as cough, sputum, fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, etc., as he reiterated that if this condition is not treated in time, it may lead to death over time. .
He also recommends paying close attention to the elderly and children during infectious processes such as influenza or pharyngitis, as influenza may be complicated by pneumonia.
Finally, he urged people to avoid self-medication to avoid developing antibiotic resistance and confusing some serious symptoms.
