Study finds these drugs can cause dementia

Taking anti-inflammatory drugs for more than four and a half years increases the risk of dementia later in life. That’s the conclusion of a study published in the journal Neurology.

The study analyzed proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs used to treat acid reflux and Zizia.

Researchers recruited and analyzed 5,712 people aged 45 to 64 in a community health study in the late 1980s.

Drug found to increase risk of future dementia

Volunteers were asked to tell them about the medications they had taken before their average age of 75 in 2011 to calculate PPI use.

Therefore, the investigator will stay with you for an average of five years. During this time, approximately 10% of people will develop dementia.

Research result

The study found that people who took PPI drugs for more than 4.4 years were 33% more likely to develop dementia.

Experts suspect that long-term use of these drugs may cause vitamin B12 levels to decrease or possibly cause brain problems.

Evidence from recent studies suggests that the drug may also be linked to the accumulation of a protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is observed in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Despite this finding, the study’s authors emphasized the need for new research to investigate this relationship.

We also recommend that people using these medications consult their doctor before making any modifications to their treatment.

What about proton pump inhibitors?

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of drugs used to treat gastric acid-related disorders.

It inhibits the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Nessa drugs include omeprazole

Chloric acid is essential for the digestion of food, but in some cases, it can be produced in excess, leading to problems such as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), peptic ulcers, and esophagitis.

PPIs block an enzyme called a proton pump, which is involved in the production of stomach acid.

In doing so, these drugs can significantly reduce the acidity of the gastric tract, helping to reduce the symptoms associated with hyperacidity.

Some common examples of proton pump inhibitors include:

  • Omeprazole
  • Esomeprazole
  • Lansoprazole
  • pantoprazole
  • Rabeprazole
