A Spanish court has officially ruled the death of a software entrepreneur and charged crypto fraudster John McAfee with suicide. The decision upholds the findings of the previous autopsy and dismisses his family’s claims of foul play.
In late June 2021, Spanish authorities found the 75-year-old tech visionary dead in his prison cell near Barcelona, just hours after he was extradited to the United States.
According to Reuters, Spanish court documents dated July 24 said: “There is no element of suspicion, accusation of criminal conduct by a third party.”
McAfee’s death was previously ruled a suicide following an autopsy performed in 2021. However his family denied this and successfully went to courtwhich allowed further investigation into his death.
His death also gave rise to many conspiracy theories, which pointed to previous tweets to further bolster their claims. One of those tweets said: “Know that if I hang myself like Epstein, it won’t be my fault.”
The Cryptocurrency Story of John McAfee
John McAfee, along with his bodyguard, was accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of fraud and money laundering by promoting cryptocurrencies.
They reportedly used a “pump and dump” scheme, selling cryptocurrency they promoted for profit and secretly made money. $23 million in undisclosed ICO payments.
After his death, someone who claimed to have over 50 gigabytes of unpublished footage of McAfee on the run decided to reprint the clips as NFTs and auction them off on Rarible.
The video was first auctioned for 500 ETH in March 2021. the price dropped to 20 ETH by November of that year. and was ultimately dropped from the list on Christmas Eve.
