Suspected stomach bug outbreak leaves guests sick after Albert Park wedding

An investigation has been launched after dozens of guests fell ill after attending the wedding.

An outbreak of suspected gastroenteritis occurred following a wedding at The Park venue in Melbourne’s Albert Park on Saturday night.

It is understood that about 300 people attended the wedding.

After the couple’s happy day, around 30 guests developed fever, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

One wedding guest told The Age their main course for the evening was chicken or pork.

The outbreak is currently being investigated by the Victorian Department of Health.

A spokesman said: “The department is aware of an outbreak of gastroenteritis among guests who attended the Albert Park Welcome Center on Saturday.”

“We are working with Port Phillip City Council to investigate the source of the outbreak and ensure all appropriate infection prevention and control measures are in place.”

The venue is working with authorities to determine what caused the outbreak.

“We are working closely with event guests and council to determine the cause of the outbreak,” the park told the Herald Sun in a statement.

The illness suffered by the wedding guests is not believed to be related to the current listeria outbreaks in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

What is gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is a short-term illness caused by infection and inflammation of the digestive system. Symptoms may include abdominal cramping, diarrhea and vomiting.

Some causes of gastroenteritis include viruses, bacteria, bacterial toxins, parasites, certain chemicals, and some medications.
