This article contains SPOILERS for the Swarm. Swarm’s most NSFW scene actually happened to Donald Glover in real life. Currently streaming on Prime Video, Swarm garnered a lot of attention in its first week of release. Part of this is due to the show’s premise, which focuses on a young woman who is driven to murder in part because of her focus on a pop idol who is modeled after Beyoncé. Another part of that relates instead to how the show takes so much from the real world and raises the question of which parts of its absurd story might contain crumbs of truth.
An example occurs at the beginning of Swarm, when the main character Dre (Dominque Fishback) wakes up to see that his one night stand partner (Rory Culkin) is holding a bowl of fruit pressed against his genitals. According to Janine Nabers, who co-created Swarm with Donald Glover, that shocking scene is based on something that happened to Glover in the past. The Nabers quote is given below via Insider:
“Donald told this very funny story about a girl he really liked and how, after they got together, he stood there with a bowl of cherries, just saying ‘Hey.’ She was so uninterested, because it’s so weird having sex with a guy you barely know and then waking up to him holding a bowl of cherries.”
Swarm also speaks to the obsession of fans online, so the fact that it has attracted attention is a bit of a natural coincidence. The Prime Video series, which debuted with seven episodes, also managed to garner attention for reasons that may not have been anticipated. A sex scene in episode 1 of Swarm sparked discussion about how these scenes are filmed, camera tricks and the work of intimacy coordinators on set.
The horror-thriller also makes clever use of the cast, bringing in Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris Jackson to comment sagely on other musical artists. Swarm even introduces Billie Eilish for a very unexpected role, playing with the perception of the pop star. Unsurprisingly, given what Glover has done with Atlanta, along with Nabers, who also worked on the FX series, Swarm knows how to present himself in a way that invites debate.
This extends to the cryptic last scene of Swarm. It leaves speculation as to what that means and what Glover and Nabers’ actual intention is with a character as complex and strange as Dre. It’s the kind of series that Prime Video needs to set itself apart, as evidenced by how quickly the thriller has managed to make its mark on social media.
