As the coronavirus continues to spread around the world, the news arrive at a pace fast and furious. But don’t let the avalanche of information to make you panic for your health and the health of your loved ones.

“The mantra is: ‘Keep calm and carry on’,” said dr. Marguerite Neill, an expert in infectious diseases at Brown University.

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about the outbreak of coronavirus and their symptoms.

The common symptoms of this infection include fever, dry cough, fatigue and shortness of breath. The disease causes lung damage, and pneumonia. Some of these symptoms are also present in the flu, making it harder to detect, but the runny and stuffy nose, are less common in this case.

Patients may also present with gastrointestinal problems or diarrhea, and Neill said that we are discovering different symptoms as we move forward. Most people get sick five to seven days after exposure, but symptoms can appear in a minimum of two days or a maximum of fourteen.

In some cases, the people who seemed stable worsened health in the second week; any infected person needs to be monitored with care.

The Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English) say that, if you enjoy good health in general, but show the following symptoms, you should seek treatment urgently.

If you think you are sick of the new coronavirusfirst, you can help protect your loved ones and your community by staying home, except to receive medical attention. The current guidance from the CDC recommends that you call a service medical attention if you notice symptoms and…

  • You live or have traveled to an area where it is known that there is an outbreak of coronavirus, or

  • you’ve had close contact with someone who has traveled to an area with an outbreak, or

  • you’ve had close contact with someone who is infected

Don’t go running to the emergency room, the more likely it is that it is full of very sick people, as well as employees and physicians with too much work.

When to call your doctor, he or she will advise you if you need to go. If you do, call in advance will help the doctor prepare for your visit and prevent the virus from spreading to other people in the office. Be sure to use a mask when you go to see the doctor, and when you’re near other people. If you do not have one, you can improvise a mask with a scarf or a t-shirt.

The CDC also suggest that you avoid using public transport, the services of shared transport and taxis, and you to stay away from other people and animals in your home as soon as possible. That means do not let anyone enter your room and, ideally, not share bathrooms. Others must remain at least 1 meter away from it and avoid contact with any surface on which you may have coughed, or touched, including door knobs, plates, cups and towels. To disinfect the environment as much as possible.

It is very possible that even if you have the virus you never do the test. This is very frustrating for people who have symptoms and want to know if they should isolate themselves and warn their friends who may have been exposed.

Follow the same steps mentioned above if you think that your children, or any other person in your home, can be infected. The children infected with the new coronavirus tend to present with mild symptoms or noneand it is not clear how easily transmit the disease to others.

High-risk patients should consult their doctors as soon as they have symptoms. A health care provider who knows your situation can help you navigate the system and advise you how and when to seek treatment. Among the high-risk patients include older adults, as well as people with asthma or lung disease or with a history of pneumonia, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, a compromised immune system due to disease or drug treatment, or a person who has received a treatment against the cancer recently.

The coronavirus appears to be more deadly the seasonal flu and quite contagious. The first estimates of the case fatality rate for coronavirus in Wuhan, China, where it originated the outbreak, have been around 2 percent, while the seasonal flu, on average, kills about 0.1 per cent of the people who are infected. But it seems that children are more affected by the flu.

On the contrary, the flu of 1918 had a fatality rate of unusually high, higher than the 2 percent. As it was so contagious, the flu killed tens of millions of people.

The new coronavirus seems to spread with a lot of ease, especially in confined spaces such as houses, hospitals, churches, and cruise ships. Apparently, it spreads through droplets expelled in a cough or a sneeze remain in the air and on surfaces.

The fact that a surface appears dirty or clean is irrelevant. If an infected person coughs and a gotícula falling on a surface, someone who then touches that surface, you can get sick.

A study of other coronaviruses found that remained on metal, glass, and plastic two-hour up to nine days. But there is good news: the virus is relatively easy to destroy with any disinfectant or chlorine.

The droplets may be deposited on the latex gloves. Some experts suggest using gloves of leather or fabric to absorb the drops, and are sufficiently bulky as to discourage the contact with the face.

Around 80 percent of people infected with the new coronavirus have relatively mild symptoms. But 20 percent of those infected are sick of gravity and about 2 percent of patients in China, where there were many cases, the disease proved fatal.

The disease can seriously affect adults of all ages. In accordance with a report of the first cases reported in the united States, and also the young adults and healthy can develop severe symptoms that may require cooling fans and other care. These patients are more likely to survive while the frail and elderly with other pre-conditions, such as diabetes or chronic diseases, face increased chances of dying of the virus.

It is not yet known. This is a new virus and it is believed that all are susceptible of getting it.

The transmission of the influenza decreases each year during the warm weather and the coronavirus SARS emerged in the winter and it was removed to June of the following year. But SARS was not defeated by the weather but by strict containment measures. The four coronaviruses mild that cause common colds continue to circulate during the warm weather and cause “cold summer”.

During the influenza pandemics of 1918 and 2009 in the fall returned to arise waves of the virus.

There is No antiviral drug approved for the coronavirus, even though you are testing several. For now, doctors can only recommend remedies usual for any viral illness: rest, medicines to reduce pain and fever, and fluids to prevent dehydration.

The patients with coronavirus with pneumonia they may also need oxygen and a ventilator (breathing machine) if they worsen your breathing problems. Some patients who seem to be suffering a deterioration in extreme health in the second week of illness.

An experimental vaccine for the coronavirus may be ready to be tested in humans in a few a few months. But even if it is approved, you will spend much more time, at least a year, before it is available for widespread use. Meanwhile, the experts urge the people and their children to be vaccinated against the flu.
