After a series of performances from Taylor Swift, Argentina were forced to relocate to host Uruguay in their World Cup qualifying match.
Swift performed three shows in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires last week (November 8, 11 and 12), using the Mas Monument at River Plate Stadium as a venue for each performance.
The American superstar is entering the final stage of her global “Era Tour”, with Argentina the first of three South American tours that will also see her visit Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil.
However, despite having played her final show in Argentina some five days earlier, the courts were not restored in time and the world champions were forced to play at the Candy Box.
Unlike most countries, Albiceleste does not have its own home ground, but usually uses the 86,000-seat Estadio Mas Monumental for its home games.
Although Swift’s tour caused some problems, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) seemed to be preparing for this situation, announcing a change of venue at the end of October.
This is nothing new for the hosts, who have played at the Candy Box Stadium before, although they have not left the Mas Monument for a qualifier before, having played in Madre de Quetta in the north of the country earlier this year. A friendly match was held against Curacao at the Des Stadium.
But perhaps Argentina never imagined, even in their wildest dreams, that a change of circumstances could see Lionel Scaloni’s side lose their unbeaten run in South American World Cup qualifying.
After goals from Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo and Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, Uruguay ended the game with a 2-0 win rather than a 2-2 draw that might have given Argentina The team did some ironic damage.
The two sides started a fierce duel, and each side dealt seven cards.
The victory moved the visitors into second place in the group, ahead of Venezuela and Brazil and two points behind Argentina.
Scaloni’s side next face old rivals Brazil away from home as the world champions look to rediscover their winning ways to retain top spot ahead of their seventh game.
