So, confirmed films. Let’s start with the film of the year, Oppenheimer, by Christopher Nolan. The story it tells is set in the 1940s and focuses on the historical figure of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, considered the father of the atomic bomb. In 1942, at the height of World War II, convinced that Nazi Germany was developing nuclear weapons, the United States began the Manhattan Project in great secrecy to develop the first atomic bomb in history. The American government decides to entrust the project to the brilliant physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Born in New York in 1904 to a family of German and Jewish descent, the scientist at just under forty years old had already made major contributions to the development of modern physics. Thus, in the top-secret laboratories of Los Alamos, in the New Mexico desert, Oppenheimer and his team of experts begin to develop a revolutionary weapon, the terrible consequences of which, once used against Japan, will be felt to this day.
Maiwenn’s period film Joan du Barry – The King’s Favorite, starring a tormented Johnny Depp as King Louis XV, has been confirmed for release in cinemas. The plot centers on the life of Jeanne Vaubernier (played by the director himself), the illegitimate daughter of a poor seamstress who, despite her modest fortune, is endowed with enormous charm and intelligence – qualities that will bring her the favor of the king. She will become his official mistress and receive the title of Countess du Barry. The love story between them will cause a real scandal. The film opened the Cannes Film Festival.
