4 thousand people underwent treatment voluntarily
The staff of the hospital who offered as volunteers, they will spend six months in a clinical trial that will reveal the effects of the BCG vaccine to combat the Covid-19.
The research, which involved more than 4 thousand workers, will be developed from random samples with vaccines for the seasonal flu and against tuberculosis.
The volunteers will be divided into two groups; the first of them will receive the vaccine against the seasonal flu, while the second will receive both.
The priority are the health care workers
To be successful the BCG vaccine against the coronavirus, the priority will be for health workers who are at greater risk of becoming infected with the Covid-19 while attending to patients with the virus.
“We wouldn’t be doing this if we don’t think that would work. We cannot guarantee this to work. And, of course, the only way to find out is trying”, as expressed by Nigel Curtis, head of infectious disease research, in the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne.
The impact of the BCG vaccine in african babies
Annually, more than 130 million babies receive the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis in Africa. The vaccine improves the immune system of the children, giving them the protection they need.
Therefore, it is expected that the vaccine also may work in people with coronavirus.
So soon, the trials will be made not only in Australia, but are already in place in the united States and China.
