Director Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly, would like to remake one of his most linear films. We are talking about Box (2009) with James Marsden, Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella.
In an interview with The Film Stage, Kelly said he would like to add episodes to Box which were omitted from the theatrical version. So do the director’s cut. However, at the moment there are no official plans in this sense.
There is nothing official yet. I’ve always talked about it as something on my wish list. There have been no official discussions yet. I would love to do it, it’s definitely on my priority list. I think it’s just a matter of time and the number of things I have to do.
Adds:
There are costs associated with visual effects; there’s a lot of filming. Some episodes that could hypothetically return to the film would require visual effects costs. It’s not obscenely expensive, but… it’s just the right amount of CGI, audio mixing and editing. I’d really like to do it at some point, and I know there’s a lot of desire for that in the era of streaming.
It actually seems like there are a lot of scenes in the trailer that were then removed from the movie. Scenes with Diaz and Marsden in the padded room or the first one in the NASA hangar.
