Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – James Gunn recalls the difficult period of the layoff

In 2018 James Gunn he was in fact fired by Marvel Studios under pressure from some conservative groups, who had denounced some of the director’s posts – dating back to many years earlier – considering them offensive and vulgar. Despite the support of fans and colleagues, Gunn was then removed from the direction of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, then returning to complete his work only the following year. During a recent interview with Empirethe filmmaker therefore recalled how the support of the actors of the MCU has been fundamental to overcome the shock of the firing:

It was hard. But the things i remember from that time are the love i got from my family and friends. I think of when Zoe Saldana and her husband (Marco Perego) came to cook me a meal the night after it happened. To when Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff came to see me just to be together, to do what friends do (…) This third film is much, much more exciting. We have this other story, of this group of people who made a career around the same time. We grew up together from this point of view. None of us were big stars when the first one was released Guardians of the Galaxy. Zoe (Saldana) was the most famous. We went through a journey where we went into the belly of the beast and I was kicked out, but the people I gave an opportunity by hiring saved me and brought me back into the fold. They dragged me to the life raft, and so on we could finish all this together.
