The Covenant’s Jake Gyllenhaal on Guy Ritchie: “He told me not to memorize lines”

FILM INFORMATION

Among Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest film projects stands out the film directed by Guy Ritchie, The Covenant, in which the Donnie Darko star plays the lead. The actor told some anecdotes about the making of the film, explaining an interesting detail that concerns his relationship with Ritchie.

In The Covenant, Jake Gyllenhaal plays an army sergeant American who returns to Afghanistan to rescue Dar Salim’s character Ahmed, who he befriended during his time on assignment in the Middle East.

Jake Gyllenhaal – who insulted Elizabeth Olsen on live TV – said he worked at each sequence of the scriptwritten especially for the film:“With Guy (Ritchie) it was unlike anything I’ve ever done. He told me ‘don’t memorize any of your lines’ and the script came with 50 pages. It wasn’t even a complete script. Usually, scripts are from 110 pages and I was like ‘What is this?’ when he first sent it. And then he said ‘Come on set and we’ll work on it that day and then you’re going to shoot your scene'”.

An approach Gyllenhaal loved:“It was one of the most inspiring and creative experiences I’ve ever had because it required total abandon. Let go, come in, and let’s find out together. I loved it”.
