Gone, the 2006 thriller/action film directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by William Monahan, could have had a sequel. The film, about two embedded spies, one in the police and the other in the mafia, who hunt each other in a continuous war of good and evil, was a great success with audiences and critics, so much so that it brought the director and screenwriter to offer a possible sequel to Warner Bros.
The studios rejected the offer, not considering Monahan’s ideas to be valid since he did not present anything concrete. Mark Wahlberg is back talk about the missed sequel, recounting how he also went to studios later and later to convince them to invest in a sequel, feeling nostalgic for one of his successful roles, here’s the ranking. Mark Wahlberg’s idea was to focus the story on the duo of Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt, asking Monahan himself to think about a possible sequel. Monahan wanted to tell a story that happened before, during and after the film, but as before, he couldn’t find anything satisfying to sell to the studios.
Gone was a success in 2006 and became the film that won Martin Scorsese his first award Oscar statuette for best director. There are timeless films and Gone is one of them, so perhaps for the first time studios have made the honorable decision of turning down any offer of a possible sequel. Let us hope that the period of great awakenings will not allow them to convince themselves. We remind you that Martin Scorsese’s new film will be released in Italian cinemas next week.
