The extended version of John Wick 4 receives a brutally honest review from the producer.

Warning: There will be SPOILERS for John Wick: Chapter 4. John Wick: Chapter 4 producer Erica Lee has said that the first version of the film was very bad. The star of the saga, Keanu Reeves, returns in the title role for the fourth episode together with director Chad Stahelski. With John Wick: Chapter 4, they deliver some of the most extensive and impressive action scenes in the series, which see John take down more enemies than ever before. The film has a running time of 169 minutes, just under three hours. However, John Wick: Chapter 4 was revealed to have had a longer version, initially lasting 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Speaking to Collider, Lee revealed that the longer version of John Wick: Chapter 4 wasn’t “good.” According to the producer, the nearly four-hour version of the sequence had some rough parts, making it boring to watch. Lee’s comments on the longer version of John Wick: Chapter 4 can be seen below:

“There really weren’t many big parts. We definitely shot a lot, but almost all of the film was about three hours long throughout post-production. The 3 hour 45 minute version was so boring and slow in parts, and it just… wasn’t good (Laughs). You have lost nothing.”

Following the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4, the titular assassin’s future may be in question. Stahelski and Reeves said they want to take a break from the character, while Lionsgate is pleased with the success of the fourth installment and hopes for a fifth film. However, whether Keanu Reeves returns to the franchise or not, spinoffs are on the way that will keep the world of John Wick alive.

The Continental is a limited prequel series that will explore the origins of the unique underground hotel and Winston, the manager character played by Ian McShane in the films. Colin Woodell will play a younger version of Winston, with the series set in the 1970s. The Continental will consist of three 90-minute episodes, which are expected to debut on Peacock this year.

The John Wick saga will also get a spin-off with Ballerina, which is expected to be released in 2024. Ana de Armas will play the protagonist, a female assassin seeking revenge for the murder of her family. Reeves is said to appear in the film, alongside McShane as Winston and the late Lance Reddick as Charon. Ballerina’s cast also includes Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne and Norman Reedus, with director Len Wisman, known for Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard, directing. So even if John Wick: Chapter 4 is shortened, the saga will expand, continuing even if Reeves doesn’t return.
