The Hamptons International Film Festival is featuring new films from Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper, Nicolas Cage and others.

Bradley Cooper, Natalie Portman, Nicolas Cage and dozens of other stars will appear on screen at the 31st Hamptons International Film Festival, which runs from October 5 to 12.

Typically, some of these stars have also appeared on various red carpets. However, with the actors’ strike entering its fourth month and actors still not promoting their films, festivals around the world are having to make do without their star power – and the Hamptons is no exception.

“At this point, what’s done with our planning is done,” said David Nugent, the festival’s artistic director. If the strike were to be resolved, he added, the festival was prepared to act quickly to make room for new guests. “We’d like to have as many creative people here as possible,” Nugent said.

In any case, there will be many of them. One of them is Paul Simon, who will be interviewed live on behalf of his new documentary, In Troubled Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, directed by Alex Gibney. Todd Haynes, director of “May December,” starring Natalie Portman as an actress exploring a problematic role, will also be interviewed live and will receive the festival’s directing award. Celine Song, director of this year’s art-house hit Past Lives (which will be shown as a special screening), will receive the festival’s Breakthrough Artist Award. There will also be foreign stars, independent film actors and documentarians who are not subject to complex strike rules.

Alex Gibney talks about his Paul Simon documentary

Alex Gibney’s latest documentary, In Troubled Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, traces his subject’s seven-decade career, from his early years working with Art Garfunkel to the creation of his 15th solo album, Seven Psalms. The film, which had not yet found a distributor at press time, will screen Friday at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Simon, who turns 82 on October 13, will be interviewed live on Saturday. Gibney recently spoke to Newsday about his experience of watching the music icon at work.

Paul Simon began writing Seven Psalms in early 2019 and then asked you to document the process. Why did he choose you?

He approached me because he liked a film I made about Frank Sinatra (Sinatra: All or Nothing). We met in Austin (near Simon’s recording studio in Wemberley, Texas). And then we had lunch or two in New York and started talking. He played me the guitar riff to “Seven Psalms,” as well as some accompanying sounds. And later he said, “You know, as part of making this movie, would you like to come and watch me make an album?” I rushed there.

The songs contain strong spiritual and religious themes. Was this new territory for him?

Not exactly new, but I think he leaned heavily on it in these songs. He says it on camera: “It’s really an argument with yourself about faith.”

He also says the same thing Bob Dylan says about songwriting – that the songs aren’t really his, they just come to him. Were you able to see this in action?

By the time I observe, many texts had already been written. But something can be seen in how he chooses the musical atmosphere for the song. It’s almost like a potter with a wheel. Here’s a wheel that’s spinning, but you’re slowly shaping the clay.

You can’t do a Paul Simon retrospective without Art Garfunkel. Did he give a new interview for the film or is this an archive?

This is archived. I approached him and he wanted a little more control than I felt. So he ultimately declined the interview. We dove pretty deep into the archives to get his side of the story, which we’ve included.

Paul Simon is now almost completely deaf in his left ear. Do you think he’ll find a way to play live again?

He is trying. It’s easier for him with a minimal set of tools. Now he can play and compose on his own on the guitar. The most difficult thing for him is to hear his voice within many other instruments.

Was making this film meaningful to you personally?

Huge, huge personal meaning. And because he is a genius and an extraordinary character, and also a really funny and interesting person. It was an extremely meaningful and educational process for me, and I was grateful for the opportunity to go on this journey.
