About five years and a few months ago, I wrote a column in which I said that the world needed less ‘Kim Kardashians’ in order to get back ‘on the right track’. I remember writing what I thought badly about her and her entire family, I remember setting her up as an example to show what was ‘wrong with society’, and I remember thinking that the world had gone crazy believing that she should be a of the most followed people on Planet Earth.
The reality is that at that time, she did not understand at all why so many people saw her and her sisters as’ beacons of wisdom ‘, because according to the way the media showed them at that time, these women’ they did nothing ‘and therefore did not’ deserve ‘anything.
It’s hard for me to accept it, but it’s true. My arguments were based on absolute ignorance. I genuinely believed that Kimberly Kardashian was nothing more than an empty woman, and considered it to be the opposite of what I felt an example of an ’empowered’ woman should be. Yes, that was how high the moral horse I was riding was, and that was how small and limited my way of seeing the world was.
Today I think the opposite, and I recognize that I am swallowing my wrong words, because over the years, each of these women have been able to show the world that there is nothing more risky than the act of underestimating a strong woman .
The Kardashians, and their half-sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner, only needed a little less than a decade (and a lot, a lot of overexposure of their lives) to conquer the ‘world’, and to understand, much earlier than others, how it is that it works, how you think, and where you are going in the future.
Where ever I saw an empty woman, today I see an intelligent woman who has ambitions, who accepts her mistakes, who feels that nothing is too big for her, who knows how and when to sell, and who has contributed enormously to the way of think of a whole generation.
And yes, they transformed beauty standards for better or for worse (because although it is true that they returned the ‘throne’ to curves, it is also true that they have been responsible for giving too much importance to plastic surgery and editing of photos), but they also demonstrated with their success that women can reach as high or higher than any man in the world.
The Kardashians did much more than a ‘reality’, and they made the fear of the purists of tradition come true: they created an empire that seems to have no limit, and they managed to turn everything they touch into gold.
And all this happened while we all believed that they did ‘nothing’ …
