Dame Helen Mirren, comedian Pete Davidson and actors Robert Downey Jr, Brooke Shields, Alexandra Daddario and Jon Hamm are just some of the celebrities who have couples.
Cariuma’s shoes have attracted a cult fan base, and one of their main selling points is that they promise to be “insanely comfortable” for travel.
Mirren was spotted wearing the ethical footwear brand’s OCA Low shoes as she arrived in the south of France for the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival, Mad Men star Hamm was spotted wearing Ibi Low Cariumas on the streets of Los Angeles, and Daddario wore the brand’s shoes. Salvas trains while on vacation with her producer husband Andrew Form.
To see if they lived up to the hype as ultra-comfortable travel shoes, I tested two pairs during a trip to Edinburgh.
I chose the Catiba Pro Low (£120/$146), similar to the pair Davidson once wore on Saturday Night Live, and the OCA Low (£89/$109), a style Mirren prefers , although mine. they’re Pantone white rather than the emerald hue the actress prefers.
Their unboxing is a small theater. An illustrated card placed atop the crepe-covered sneakers explains what the shoes are made from, from raw natural rubber to organic cotton canvas. The cardboard shoe holders are emblazoned with the phrases “we hold your spot” and “swap us, just add feet.” Small tags inserted into the laces contain messages such as “conscious mind, comfortable feet.”
Founded in Brazil in 2018 by shoe industry veterans David Python and Fernando Porto, the shoe brand’s designs are inspired by surf and skateboarding culture, giving the shoes a laid-back aesthetic.
They’re not a million miles away from the likes of Vans or Converse in appearance.
They say they don’t require any break-in time, and my first thought when I try them on is that they really are very comfortable. Made from cork, memory foam and organic castor oil, the vegan insoles provide good support and a nice, springy feel to walk on.
The shoe’s slip resistance is put to the test when I arrive in Edinburgh in pouring rain and navigate the city’s steep, slippery cobbled streets. They have good traction and a thick rubber outsole that keeps rainwater out.
During the trip, I walked more than 20,000 steps a day. Overall, the shoe lives up to its super-comfortable claim, and it’s smart enough to wear to dinner, too.
And one of the biggest pluses is that Cariuma strives to be more environmentally friendly than established shoe brands. For example, the company works exclusively with ethical factories and environmentally friendly tanneries and plants two trees for every pair of shoes sold. To date, more than two million trees have been planted, mainly in the Atlantic Forest of South America.
As for the downsides, the shoes are not the cheapest as sneakers are. Canvas models get dirty easily, but can be washed by hand. The shoes have a rugged silhouette, so they’re not easy to throw into a backpack on the go. They’re also better suited for urban exploration than intense outdoor expeditions.
However, next time I head into town, I’ll definitely take my pair with me. I can see why Cariuma sneakers have earned celebrity endorsements. Life in the shoes of stars is extremely comfortable.
