Mel Gibson’s sequel to The Passion of the Christ is in production.
Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ sequel, Resurrection, is expected to begin production in January 2024, nearly two decades after the first chapter hit theaters.
The sequel will once again be directed by Gibson, with Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus, whose miraculous resurrection is central to the film’s plot. Mel Gibson recently said in an interview that he wrote two scripts, and one of them is like an “acid trip” that takes viewers to “other worlds.” The director did not specify which of the two scenarios would be used in the film.
Narrates the Passion of Christ the last days of Jesus’ earthly life and his crucifixion. Besides Caviezel in the title role, the film also stars Maya Morgenstern as Mary, Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, Francesco De Vito as Peter, Luca Lionello as Judas, and several other homegrown actors in an international cast.
The first film grossed $612 million on a budget of $30 million. Critics received the film with mixed reviews.
