Serena Williams is recognized as a trailblazer in athletic fashion!

Williams always pushes the envelope in style on the court. From dresses to custom tennis wear and Flo-Jo-inspired jumpsuits, she’s as influential in athleisure as she is in tennis. Her love for fashion led the tennis icon to launch her own brand, S by Serena, and placed her among other fashion pioneers. According to Hypebeast, after decades of glorious achievements, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced that Serena Williams will receive the Fashion Icon Award, becoming the first athlete in history to win the award.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve used fashion as an outlet to express myself – fashion gave me the confidence to go out on the court, acknowledge who I am and know where I’m going. I have my own brand, S by Serena ‘s dream has become a reality, and throughout my career I’ve been lucky enough to work with the best-known designers and the most exciting emerging creatives,” Williams said in a statement.

Williams explained.

CFDA Chairman Thom Browne said Williams is absolutely deserving of the 2023 Fashion Icon Award, calling her “the ultimate example of individuality.”

Brown said: “Serena is one of the most inspiring people in the world…a true individual…she is an icon in sports…representing greatness at the highest level…bringing fashion into another world… For another audience…Always true to who she is, on and off the court…She is the perfect blend of our world…The ultimate example of personality in everything she does…Serena is a A true fashion icon. “

The CFDA is always working to become more inclusive. In 2020, CaSandra Diggs made history as the first Black woman to lead the organization. In 2021, Dapper Dan made history as the first Black designer to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Now, Williams is carrying the historic torch this year, with Brooklyn-based designer Brandon Blackwood also named as one of this year’s nominees. Williams will receive the prestigious trophy at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards on November 6.
