The Tarazona gastroenteritis epidemic originated in the province of Soria and has affected nearly 500 people

Analysis of the waters of the Queles River shows the presence of Crysto-poridium native animals before the river enters the territory of Aragon in the province of Soria. Therefore, the Aragonese administration stated that it is increasingly assumed that the source of the pollution is located outside the territory of our autonomous community.

The Directorate-General of Public Health of the Ministry of Health will coordinate all actions together with the Interior Ministry and the Autonomous Regions of Castilla and León, Aragon and Navarra, which also draw water from the Queles River to fill the Radhesa reservoir, Supplies water to several towns in the Foral community of Navarra.

Cryptosporidium was the causative agent of a gastroenteritis outbreak that occurred in the city of Turiazon over the weekend of September 9-10 and subsequently spread to the three other locations mentioned above. A total of 498 people have been counted since the start. Clinically, the patient’s condition is mild, manifesting as diarrhea, and in special cases, vomiting and fever.

Starting that week, Tarazona residents could not use oral water or brush their teeth and had to boil the water for at least 10 minutes before cooking. To this end, 10 drinking water tanks in the city of Zaragoza, affected by the contamination of the water of the Queles River with protozoa of the genus Cryptosporidium, have been filled. Each tank can hold 1,000 liters of potable water and, taking into account the number of inhabitants in each city, one has been installed in each town of Torreras, Los Fayos and Novalas, and seven in Tarazona.
