A small track of just over a kilometer in length in a semi-oval shape located at one of the exits of the A35 motorway on the outskirts of Bresia, is much more than a simple test track as its appearance seems to show.

It is actually about the completion of several years of work common between the company that has the concession of the route known as BreBeMi (for Brescia, Bergamo and Milan), and the Stellantis Group together with other related companies, who developed the induction charging system for electric vehicles in motion.

The project responds to the need to generate various charging modes for the large volume of electric cars and utility vehicles expected to have in the coming years. Is an alternative answer to home chargers, public charging stations and superchargers that are being installed in cities.

The circuit is called “Arena del Futuro”, measure exactly 1,050 meters in length and is powered by a 1 MW electrical power. The system used for induction charging, that is wirelessly, is named DWPT (Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer), which was installed in two vehicles, one Fiat 500e and a Bus Iveco E-Way, with which many kilometers of tests were done with highly satisfactory results.

The reason that mobilized Stellantis to invest in this technology, is to offer customers a range of electrical products with great autonomy and ultra-fast charging speeds, but also an ecosystem of services to respond to the needs of users. For this, the investment will be more than 30,000 million euros until 2025 in electrification and software development to support decarbonization plans.

Recharging moving cars has a double benefit to watch out for. While the naked eye can be seen the value it would bring in reducing recharge time, downtime much longer than it takes to fill the fuel tank of a car with a heat engine today, there is a second benefit that it would lower the cost of an electric car. Because in the average that the networks of routes or highways extend, and even streets, with wireless charging system, the dimensions of car batteries may be reduced, which, as is well known, are the element that makes them so much more expensive than a similar car with an internal combustion engine.

The system works by linking the cars with a network of loops that are under the asphalt, but for a car to charge its battery by induction, you need to have a receiver, as with the wireless cell phone recharging.

Finally, two other advantages that the system will guarantee, are that by being linked through a IdO (Internet of Things) technology connection, there will be a Constant “dialogue” between motorways and vehicles that circulate through them, but also, the routes will have a better quality asphalt because it will be necessary protect those loops inclement weather and passing vehicles.

Of course, everything has a second look, as inevitable and necessary as that of benefits. The electrical energy generated to power these induction charging routes must be sustainable electrical energy., that is, obtained without emitting polluting gases. Energy must be latent at very high values ​​to support a demand from many vehicles at the same time, and that special asphalt, it must also be able to be produced without pollutingTherefore, the cement industry must also adapt to a need to produce sustainably.

Good ideas are and are valued. In fact, this project “Arena of the Future” has recently been designated as one of the 100 most important inventions of 2021 by the prestigious magazine TIME.
