The United Nations accepts the Gaza resolution

The UN Security Council approved the draft resolution demanding an “immediate and prolonged cessation” of the conflict in Gaza.

The draft resolution submitted by Malta was voted on in the UN Security Council in emergency session.

The bill was approved by a majority of 12 votes out of 15 members, with 3 abstentions.

The United States, Russia and the United Kingdom were the countries that abstained from voting.

On the other hand, the Council rejected Russia’s amendment proposal to include the term ceasefire instead of “humanitarian truce.”

The resolution requested “an immediate and prolonged humanitarian pause in conflicts.”

The resolution called for an “immediate and prolonged humanitarian cessation of hostilities” instead of a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons and the establishment of corridors in the Gaza Strip in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The resolution stated that the periods in question should be “sufficient days” in accordance with international humanitarian law, and called on the United Nations and its partners for rapid, safe and uninterrupted access to humanitarian aid.

The resolution called for the release of all hostages, especially children, from Hamas and other groups, and demanded an end to the obstruction of the supply of basic needs to the civilian population in Gaza.

The decision indicated that these practices created a large burden, especially on children, and stressed the need to provide assistance to meet the needs of children and society as a whole.

The resolution stressed the importance of coordination and prior information, and requested communication with the United Nations regarding the movement of children, patients, and employees.

In the resolution, UN Secretary-General António Guterres was asked to provide information to the UN Security Council regarding the implementation of the resolution.

Protection of children

In the resolution, all parties are required to respect international law, international humanitarian law and human rights law, and “international humanitarian law provides protection for children.” The statement has been included.

Recalling that the principle of “protection of children in conflict” is stipulated in the Geneva Convention, the resolution opposed the deprivation of basic needs and forced displacement of civilians in Gaza, especially children.

The resolution stated that the humanitarian situation in Gaza also harms the educational process for children.

It is worth noting that the resolution did not mention the Hamas attack on Israel or the killing of civilians by Israel. Expressions of condemnation in previous drafts were not approved by member states. For this reason, it is believed that Malta avoided addressing these issues, especially in order to pass the resolution.

The veto power was used on 4 draft resolutions

The UN Security Council vetoed four draft resolutions on the humanitarian situation in Gaza after October 7.

The United States, the United Kingdom, France and Japan voted “no” on the draft resolution, which was first presented by Russia on October 17, and called for a “humanitarian ceasefire.”

Following this, the United States vetoed a draft resolution submitted by Brazil calling for a “cessation of hostilities” on October 18.

Later, on October 26, Russia and China vetoed a US draft resolution addressing the “right of states to self-defense,” and on the same day, the United States and the United Kingdom vetoed a Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire. For humanitarian reasons.

Although the draft resolutions were not adopted, 121 out of 193 countries in the United Nations General Assembly voted “yes” to the draft law, which calls for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

For the resolution to be approved by the UN Security Council, 9 countries must vote “yes” and no permanent member may veto the resolution.

The primary responsibility of the UN Security Council, also known as the executive body of the United Nations, is “to maintain international peace and security.”

The UN Security Council, which is responsible for contributing to the development of friendly relations between member states, needs cooperation to solve international problems.
