One of the many, many things that make the success The Squid Game Netflix is so attractive is how real it feels. It’s kind of fantasticSure, but the great idea that people can get so desperate in their lives that they are willing to do anything for money always rings true. Also, these people are not competing in some kind of sci-fi competition. Running manHunger games. They are competing in simple and understandable games for kids. Games that, as a spectator, you immediately remember having played or can instantly imagine how you would play, because the rules are so simple.

However, it was much less simple to bring these games to the screen. A video posted by Hyungrok Kim, a CG supervisor on the Gulliver Studios show, shows how much CGI was used to bring the series to life. And while some of this is pretty obvious, other moments are likely to leave you with your jaw on the ground. Check it out.

Well obviously the glass tile game wasn’t 100% real. Ditto for the rat in the tunnel and the huge room where the players played tug of war. But I was surprised by the amount of stage extension that was used on the pastel staircases and in the “red light, green light” areas. Also, while you obviously knew that all that money wasn’t real, it’s a bit surprising that everyone was fake too. Overall, the CG was wonderfully integrated into the series to take this simple, strong, and undeniably captivating idea and present it in a much more epic way. And really, that’s when CGI is at its best: when you can’t tell what’s real and what’s not.

If for some reason you are like me and you did not immediately get carried away by the hype of The Squid GameWell, why do you keep reading? Go to Netflix and do it now. Once I started, I finished the entire series in 24 hours. It is absolutely fantastic.
