There are murders in the building: Meryl Streep is happy with the storyline with Martin Short | TV

John Hoffman, co-author of the film “Only Murders in the Building”, spoke about the love line of the characters Meryl Streep and Martin Short.

In a lengthy interview with The Wrap, Hoffman talked about the two characters’ relationship:

Oliver and Loretta most often say: “Oh, we are on the verge of something huge on a personal level.” And as soon as he realizes this, Oliver realizes all of Loretta’s warning signs regarding the case they continue to fight: “Oh, but she’s so amazing, and now she calmed me down …”, and we end this story full of suspicion.

It’s kind of unexpected to imagine a couple between Meryl Streep and Martin Short and see how they find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, they have nothing to be ashamed of, growing old or anything like that. It’s just a beautiful love story that you believe in, I think because of who these two characters are. But then you see Marty take an incredible step forward and no one works harder than him and he comes to work and you see him film heartbreaking scenes that have to be played out with such dramatic intensity while keeping it all comical and mysterious … I’m amazed.

Hoffman added that Streep told him that the ferry crossing was one of the top two places of her career:

I said, “OK, what’s number one?” And she’s like, “Well, when Robert Redford washed my hair in Africa.” And I said, “Yes, everything will be fine, I’ll take number two.” But it was a remarkable moment in film history that hit me in the face as I was on the ferry back to New York at 2:00 in the morning. That evening, the shooting ended, it was about two in the morning. We were returning to the city. It was the most magical night on set and they were amazing together.

Created by Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman, Only Murders in the Building follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share the same obsession with the true crime genre and suddenly find themselves involved in a murder . When a gruesome death occurs at their exclusive Upper West Side mansion, the three suspect murder and use their vast knowledge of the true crime genre to investigate. While recording a podcast documenting the case, the three uncover the mysteries of the palace regarding events that took place many years ago. Perhaps the lies the main characters tell each other could be even more explosive. They quickly realize that the killer may be hiding among them and try to decipher the evidence before it’s too late.

Only Murders in the Building was co-written and written by Steve Martin and John Hoffman (Grace and Frankie, The Search). Martin and Hoffman are executive producers along with Martin Short, Selena Gomez, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal.
