In an effort to mitigate the impact of plastic on the environmental crisis, biodegradable paper straws are being produced around the world. A small change can add to the difference. Read here: Menstrual Cravings?Follow These Tips So They Don’t Control Your Diet
Plastic accounts for 85 percent of waste entering the oceans, and it warns that the amount of this material impacting the oceans will almost triple by 2040, generating between 230 and 37 million tonnes a year. A report by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The report shows that plastic pollution threatens all ecosystems and that action is urgently needed. The invention of paper straws is a direct attack on the use of single-use plastics, but clearly, they can pose other problems, including impacts on human health. In a recent study published in the journal Food Additives and Contaminants, a team of researchers from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) analyzed 39 brands of cigarettes to find out what ingredients they contained and whether they contained perfluoroalkyl groups and polyfluoroalkyl substances. According to the European Environment Agency, thousands of synthetic chemicals can cause health problems such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility problems and even cancer.
The results showed that 27 of the 39 brands analyzed contained some type of PFAS substance, albeit in very small amounts: “We found small amounts of PFAS, but they can be found in human tissue and the environment over time accumulation,” explains Thimo Groffen, lead author of the study. Accumulations of PFAS can persist in the environment for centuries, and it takes at least 15 years for the body to clear them. They are difficult chemicals to remove, so the researchers suggest that the straws be made of stainless steel.
about these dangerous substances
They were discovered in 1938 by an employee of the DuPont Chemical Company. They started using it in pans, Teflon, and it was indestructible.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, there is evidence that these substances can have harmful effects on human health and even animals. In fact, these substances can be ingested through food or drinking water that contain PFAS. Read here: Did you know women’s kidneys are more resistant?Research reveals why
“PFAS are absorbed and accumulate in the body. They remain in the body for a long time; and if they accumulate, they can cause harmful health effects,” they wrote in the EPA.
Animal studies have shown that these chemicals have adverse effects on the reproductive and immune systems, development, and organs such as the liver and kidneys. Chemical agents can cause tumors in animals, and in human epidemiological studies, elevated cholesterol levels have been found in humans exposed to chemicals.
Other risks are:
– Low birth weight.
– Effects on the immune system.
– cancer.
– Thyroid hormone disorders.
However, the researchers stress that the risk of saving by discarding straw consumption is minimal, as it is also present in chicken and some vegetables. But this study suggests paper straws aren’t all that popular. The option recommended by the Belgian researchers is the stainless steel straw.
