The Cyprus health authorities, European island state located in the Mediterranean Sea, reported detection of up to 25 cases of infection with a combined version of the delta and omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which they called “Deltacron”.
“Nowadays there are omicron and delta co-infections. We have found a variant that it is a combination of both, “warned the professor of Biology at the University of Cyprus. and director of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology, Leondios Kostrikis, according to the Europa Press agency.
Speaking to a Cypriot media, the scientist argued that the new variant has the genetic signature of Omicron and the genomes of Delta.
So far Kostrikis and his team identified 25 cases of Deltacron and highlighted that they are more frequent in hospitalized patients after having contracted Covid-19 than in non-hospitalized positives.
Yesterday samples of the 25 detected patients were sent to the Gisaid international database of the Pasteur Institute, in charge of publishing the official sequencing of the new variants of influenza and coronavirus.
«We will see in the future if this variant is more pathological or contagious or if it will be imposed »on Delta and Ómicron, Kostrikis noted, although in your opinion it will most likely be dwarfed by the Omicron variant for being more contagious.
