The Ministry of Rural Affairs has informed the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food through the Veterinary Health Alert Network that two cases of wild bird samples affected by avian influenza have been detected in the municipalities of Ares and Lugo, both of which have been obtained from the Algate Veterinary Central Laboratory. Confirmed, in Madrid.

Patrol Tower explained that these were two yellow-legged gull specimens, one of which had clinical symptoms when found, and the other was dead. They were transferred to the Oleros and Overar Wildlife Recovery Centers to collect samples and analyze them in the laboratory, before the carcasses were disposed of in accordance with current regulations.

With these two new cases, 12 outbreaks were reported in Galicia in 2023, 11 of which involved seagulls and one involving parasitic skuas. Xunta clarified that since these are wild birds, they do not signal a change in health protocols related to avian influenza or lead to additional restrictions or measures on trade in live birds and their derivatives. They remember this poses no risk to people, but they recommend not handling dead or diseased specimens.
