‘They laughed at my joke and then gave it to my male co-star’: Andrew Garfield’s Marvel co-star says Hollywood stealing her jokes is sexist

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Emma Stone revealed that there were times when she improvised a joke that suited both the scene and her character, but the director gave it to her male co-star, essentially stealing her line. She said,

“I’m hesitant to talk about being a woman, but there have been times when I’ve improvised and they’ve laughed at my joke and then passed it on to my male partner. Given my joke. Or I’d say, “I really don’t think this line will work,” and they’d say, “Just say it, just say it, if it doesn’t work, we’ll cut it,” and they did. I didn’t cut it and it really didn’t work!”

She mentioned that the filmmakers didn’t take her opinions on certain lines of dialogue seriously.

One of the biggest issues of feminism and equality that has been talked about and raised is the gender parity and pay gap that exists in industries. Hollywood is also known for the large pay gap between the sexes, with a 2019 study by the University of Huddersfield finding that female actors were paid $1.1 million less than their male counterparts.

So far in my career, I have had to cut the salaries of my male colleagues so that I can have parity with them. And they do it for me because they think it’s right and fair.”

She also mentioned how to close this pay gap: Her male co-stars had to take pay cuts to match her salary and Hollywood required such male stars to come out and make such gestures to close the pay gap .
