Serena Williams had a very interesting response when asked about Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic’s complaints about the venue at the 2012 Madrid Open.
The tournament, usually played on clay, will be played on blue this year. Both Nadal and Djokovic complained about the change, with the Spaniard even threatening to boycott the change if clay court was not reinstated.
Serena Williams entered the tournament as the ninth seed and defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-3 in the final to win the title. She previously defeated Elena Vesnina, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova and Lucy Hradka .
During the post-match press conference, the American was asked to comment on Nadal and Djokovic’s comments on blue clay, and she responded by saying that women are stronger than men and that’s why they have children.
“Women are much stronger than men. That’s why we have kids, you can never handle kids. We ladies don’t complain, we just try our best. On the WTA, we are real performers, we are not out to be Weak,” Serena Williams said.
The win at the 2012 Madrid Open was the second tournament win of 2012 for an American.

Serena Williams has competed in five Madrid Opens during her career and has an impressive record at the event, with 20 wins in 23 matches and two champion.
The American participated in the inaugural tournament in 2009 but retired with a knee injury in his first match against Francesca Schiavone. In 2010, Williams suffered another disappointment when she lost in the third round to Nadia Petrova.
After missing the 2011 Madrid Open, she won her first WTA 1000 title in 2012. In 2013, the American successfully defended her title, defeating Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in the final.
The following year, she reached the quarterfinals in Madrid, where she was scheduled to face Petra Kvitova, but withdrew due to a thigh injury.
Williams last competed in the event in 2015, defeating Madison Brengle, Sloane Stephens, Victoria Azarenka and Kaloa Suarez-Navarro to reach the semi-finals. She lost to eventual champion Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-3.
