Greta Gerwig’s debut feature film Lady Birdas a solo writer/director, she launched her career in the entertainment industry. Telling the story of a famous teenager’s senior year at Catholic school and her journey of losing and gaining friends and boyfriends, Gerwig co-starred with Saoirse Ronan.

Timothée Chalamet is not your typical heartthrob guy
Phenomenal writer and director Greta Gerwig crafted a coming-of-age story with her indie drama. Lady Bird in 2017. Gerwig brought Saoirse Ronan to life in a funny and touching story about the typical stages of a young woman’s life, and Gerwig delivered a poignant clarity mixed with hyper-realism.
Gerwig then introduced viewers to the romantic relationship between Ronan’s Lady Bird and Timothée Chalamet’s Kyle. Featuring close-cropped hair with growing red streaks and a lanky but graceful girl next to a handsome rebel, the director created an authentic portrayal of teenage girls.
However, although the film portrayed Timothée Chalamet’s character as a pretentious murderer, Greta Gerwig argued that Kyle was not in fact your typical dirtbag heartthrob. Although the film portrays him as a boyfriend in a chain-linked tuxedo and leather jacket, the director claimed that he shares many of the character’s sensibilities. She also went on to mention how she had to charm Chalamet for the role.

Finding Timothée Chalamet a dreamy guy who isn’t your typical heartthrob, Greta Gerwig revealed how she had to give the actor a makeover for Lady Bird. According to the trivia shared IMDbThe director advised Chalamet to grow his hair long for the role of Kyle, Lady Bird’s heavy smoker and conspiracy theorist.

Writer/director Greta Gerwig later discussed it with The keeper, as she often echoes Timothée Chalamet’s Kyle. While the world thinks Gerwig is actually the man behind Lady Bird, she’s actually the woman behind Kyle. With much to do with Chalamet’s character, Gerwig tried to focus more on how to bring out the best in him.
“I talked to Timothy at length about his character’s beliefs, and he said, “The funny thing is that everyone will think you’re Lady Bird, but you’re Kyle.” And I thought: “I know!” I’m secretly Kyle. I have the same paranoia as Kyle.”
Thus, in the end, Greta Gerwig tried and successfully turned Timothée Chalamet’s character into a crush archetype, formed in early adolescence and often carried over into the world of adult dating.
