‘This shit is so sexist’ – Tennis fans join Serena Williams’ former coach in mocking ridiculous Iga Swiatek snub

Caroline Garcia and Iga Swiatek met for the fourth time recently at the WTA 1000 event in China. In addition to the stunning victory of the Polish tennis star, the blockbuster showdown between two top ten WTA players also attracted public attention due to off-court controversy.

The much-anticipated quarter-finals of the China Open were cruelly snubbed by a prominent sports network, which preferred to broadcast the Shanghai Masters second-round match between two ATP players. A group of fans recently took to social media to criticize Tennis Media Channel for their callous snub. Joining the bandwagon was none other than Serena Williams’ former coach Rennae Stubbs, who also expressed her displeasure with a blunt response.

Caspar Rudd and Yoshihito Nishioka recently faced off in the round of 64 of the ongoing Shanghai Masters. Even though it was a first-round match, the main live content on Tennis Channel was the ATP Masters 1000 event and not the China Open quarterfinals between Caroline Garcia and Iga Swiatek.

One tennis fan noticed this and took to Twitter to criticize their “bizarre” decision not to broadcast the match between the two WTA top 10 players on the main broadcast.

I tweeted, “It was an odd choice to show Nishioka vs. Ruud on a major tennis channel live broadcast instead of Swiatek vs. Garcia – a high-stakes WTA 1000 QF with 2 Top 10 players.”

Other users also flocked to the comments section to lambast the popular tennis media network for not showing the WTA quarterfinals live on its main channel. Likewise, another fan commented, “They are showing it on T2, which is their second channel that is offered by Youtube TV and some other cable providers, and is also available on Samsung TV Plus for free for people with Samsung smart TVs and mobile devices. Of course, it’s live on the Tennis Channel app. But it should definitely be on their main channel.”

Even Australian tennis coach Rene Stubbs joined fans in criticizing Tennis Channel for the cruel snub. She commented, “too disgusting”

Another user vented his displeasure while heaping praise on the thrilling three-set match between Garcia and Swiatek (7-6, 6-7, 1-6). He said, “Especially the girls played great tennis”

Another fan asserts that the WTA clash is more important “interesting” And compare it to matchups between their male counterparts. I commented, “I can confirm that Swiatek-Garcia would be more interesting, Nishioka just doesn’t play atm”

Meanwhile, one fan thought it was discriminatory, writing on Twitter: “Oh I can’t even watch because they have the early games in Shanghai on the Tennis Channel… I’m sick of it, this thing is so sexist 🧍🏾”

The fan further slammed Tennis Channel for airing an ATP early-round match instead of the WTA quarter-finals, which had “significant consequences”.

She tweeted, “They really decided to air the early rounds of the ATP 500 on the Tennis Channel instead of the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000, and that has a major impact on who qualifies for the WTA finals…?”
