Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new golf league TGL unveiled its tournament format on Tuesday, revealing the high-tech nature of how the league will conduct its tournaments.
The league calls its style of play “Modern Match Play” and includes a mix of physical and virtual pipelines for golf simulation.
Players can tee off from a tee with real grass, fairways, rough and sand and hit the ball into a 64 x 46 foot screen. The screen size is approximately 20 times larger than a standard emulator. The field is about the size of a football field.
The competition consists of 15 holes, divided into 9-hole triples match and 6-hole singles match. Each hole is worth 1 point, and the team with the fewest strokes on a particular hole wins. If two teams are tied on a hole, no points will be scored by either team. The team with the most points at the end of 15 holes wins.
TGL events will be broadcast on ABC, ESPN, ESPN+, and ESPN2, with ABC airing the league’s preview program on December 30.
The league will have six teams, including teams in Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Atlanta and San Francisco. The final market for the franchise has yet to be announced.
The list of investors in league franchises includes Stephen Curry, Steve Cohen, Venus and Serena Williams.
