Colonel Gary Cooper moved to Mexico in 1866 in search of his fortune. There, while the people are rebelling against the Austrian emperor Maximilian, he meets the adventurer Burt Lancaster, who invites him to do business together in the service of the emperor. In Mexico City, they meet Countess Denise Darcel and find they must escort her to Vera Cruz. During the journey, the woman discovers that a cargo of gold is hidden in the carriage and offers to take it and then divide it. This is the beginning of a test without limits.
