Why are cardboard straws toxic?

This was determined by a study conducted by the University of Antwerp.This is because cardboard straws have Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)chemical elements that may have harmful effects and contribute to health problems, e.g. Obesity, cancer, infertility, liver and thyroid damage.

The research has been published in the journal Food Additives and Contaminants. To develop it, we analyzed 39 brands of straws made of different materials: plastic, cotton, stainless steel, bamboo and glass. Of the 39 brands, 27 contained PFAS and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Of all these brands, 20 produced cardboard straws, 18 of which also contained PFAS.
