Director’s Notes
Long before shooting Ferrari, I happened to walk through the rooms of Enzo’s house, see his diaries, learn about his habits, admire the wallpaper in the bedroom where Laura spent the last years of her life, asking her doctor questions, meeting Lina’s niece, understanding her image life and its present.
Sitting in Enzo’s barber’s chair, walking and living on the sidewalks of his neighborhood, studying the shiny mechanical parts of the Lampredi V12 engine and 1950s racing model sculptures and, most importantly, interacting with Enzo’s son, Piero, who I studied with and so much absorbed.
I tried to revive Enzo’s passion and charm, his sharp wit, the devastating loss of his son, the theatrical impulses, the need for emotional refuge, the tragedy, the monumental bet on a single race and the struggle for survival. : all elements that collided during the four months of 1957.
